The Vermilion Parish Library was established in 1942 and today remains the educational, cultural and recreational center for the Parish.
The Parish Library System is made up of six (6) branches, The Main Branch is located in Abbeville and five (5) other branches located in Delcambre, Erath, Kaplan, Gueydan and Maurice. Business matters as well as all cataloguing of all materials, interlibrary loans and programming planning are performed at the Headquarters in the Abbeville Branch.
Annual circulation averages well over 325,000 items. The growth of technology has challenged the staff during the last few years. The circulation numbers have dropped slightly while the library usage has tripled. In January 2006 the library system has 45 computers parishwide and additional computers are in the process of being purchased to serve as public access computers in conjunction with the library’s automation system.
To build upon the James O. Modisette Award (given every even year by the Louisiana Library Association) won by the Vermilion Parish Library in 2002 and 2006 for being the Outstanding Louisiana Library, the Vermilion Parish Library strives to improve, begin and/or continue outstanding service to all communities of Vermilion Parish. Also, additional exhibits and displays will be hosted by the library system and meeting room facilities will continue to be available for public use.
The Library's online catalog is a work in progress – additions and changes are made daily. Adult, Young Adult and Children’s programming still ranks as one of the Library’s premier service.
